Immune Deficiency – National Stem Cell Foundation
Immune deficiency is a state in which the immune system’s ability to fight infection is compromised or entirely absent. The most apparent sign of an immune deficiency is frequent illness. Because a normal immune system protects the body against infection, patients with primary immune deficiencies are more susceptible to infections of all kinds.
Primary Immune Deficiency Diseases
The γ c gene is on the × chromosome, and mutations in the γ c protein result in the X-linked form of severe combined immune deficiency syndrome (X-SCID) (Chap. 374). The members of the interferon (type II) receptor family include the receptors for IFN-γ and -β, which share a similar 210-amino-acid binding domain with conserved cysteine pairs at both the amino and carboxy termini.
When part of the immune system is either absent or not functioning properly, due to hereditary or genetic reasons, it’s called PIDD. If the immune system is damaged due to other factors (chemotherapy, HIV, malnutrition, etc.), the condition is called secondary immunodeficiency disease.
